On the night of October 1st, 1977, Peter Sutcliffe prowled Manchester in his red Ford Corsair V4 for yet another victim. Armed with various hammers and knives, he sought out Jean Jordan on Moss Side in Manchester or Scotch Jean as she was known by friends and colleagues. She would be his sixth known victim.

Like most of Peter Sutcliffe's victims, Jean Jordan was a sex worker. So the amount of vigor put into the investigation was lackluster by the police. They were anonymous and not worthy of the effort that the police would put into the investigation until, one day, one of the victims would be a respectable citizen. At the time, also, it mattered that she was a woman. Or didn't matter, to be more precise. Women at the time were not seen as equal to men. A stigma still alive and well today.

These recordings "take place during that night." The source material is done as close to the original night of the crime as possible. An owner of the same car as the one Peter Sutcliffe owned, a Ford Corsair V4, was tracked down here in Norway, and sound from the engine was recorded. An immense brutal crackling noise from a non-stealthy engine dating back to the 1960s. The weather on the night of October 1st, 1977, was researched, and sound sourcing from weather resembling it was done in the present time. There were showers of light rain that night, and the moon was a waning gibbous. So the recording was done on several nights of light rain in the city. The light showers trickling down on steal roof plating and red brick walls. And several recordings were done on the outskirts of town when the moon was in its Waning Gibbous phase. Silent but present, slowly fading and becoming darker as the days pass. The Waning Gibbous phase is when the lit-up part of the moon shrinks from 99.9% to 50.1%

The description made by Bruce Jones upon discovering the mutilated body of Jean Jordan nine days after her death stuck in my mind for two years. I could not rid myself of the image of the crazed human being ravaging this young girl. The idea of his face and the act haunted me. This is how he described it:

"I had a good mate at work, and he was a keen gardener. So we got an allotment, and we were going to grow our veg and stuff there. It was a lovely sunny day. I'd got the day off work; he'd got the day off work. We thought we'd go to the allotment and get a shed up. I was getting all the old bricks to lay a base. And I… (scoffs) I'd only realized later that I'd rolled… my wheelbarrow over this girl. Uh… Her hair was burnt off. Her face was smashed in. Her breasts were cut off. She was… (sighs). She was disemboweled. She… Sh… Sh… She was cut in the most horrendous ways a person could cut someone.''

This is not a tribute to a man who murdered women but a story of a beastly and depraved act that no man bears the right to or that no man or woman should suffer. This is a tribute to the victims of Peter Sutcliffe and not the cowardly and brutal man he was. This is a tribute to women who have lost their lives or suffered bodily harm under the dominance of men.
